Mother Charged with Assaulting Child in Raritan
The Bridgewater Patch has reported that the Raritan Police Department has arrested and charged a borough resident following an incident on February 15, 2019. According to the reports that have been released at this point in time, it appears that the police were first dispatched to Thompson Street and Railroad Avenue after an individual could be heard screaming for help. When the officers arrived on scene and investigated the incident they determined that a juvenile was the one yelling for help. A further investigation led the officers to believe that the juvenile had been assaulted by their mother and that the injuries were consistent with a “lashing”.
Charged with Assault in Raritan NJ?
The mother was placed under arrest and taken down to the Raritan Police Department for processing. She has formally been charged with one count of simple assault and released upon a summons to appear in the Raritan Municipal Court. Detectives have indicated that the incident is still under investigation and that the New Jersey Department of Children and Families has been notified. Based on the allegations, the mother could be charged with endangering the welfare of a child in addition to the simple assault charge. If this occurs, things quickly go from bad to worse. Endangering the welfare of a child is a second degree indictable offense based on the nature of the allegations. That means that the entire case would need to be transferred from the Raritan Municipal Court to the Somerset County Superior Court for disposition. A second degree endangering the welfare of a child is a serious offenses, one that could land an individual behind bars for up to a decade.
