Holmdel Police Uncover Attempted Scam with Help of 89 Year Old Man
The Asbury Park Press has reported that Sgt. William and Patrolman O’Keefe of the Holmdel Police Department took into custody would be scam artist from New York thanks to the assistance of an 89-year-old resident. Based on the information that has been released at this point in time, the defendant, a 29-year-old male from Brooklyn contacted the Holmdel resident indicating that his son had been arrested and that he need $6,500 in cash to “bail-out” him. The resident wisely immediately contacted the Holmdel Police Department about the scam and they quickly hatched a plan to catch the would be defendant.

When the defendant arrived at the victim’s house to pickup the money he was meet by local authorities. He was taken into custody without issue and taken to the Holmdel Police Department for processing. Although the specific charges have not been released at this point in time, the defendant will most likely be charged with attempted theft by deception in the third degree since the value of the “theft” was more than $500 but less than $75,000. Furthermore, since the offense is considered an indictable offenses, the charge must be transferred from the Holmdel Municipal Court to the Monmouth County Superior Court for disposition. The defendant will most likely make his first court appearance at his Central Judicial Processing Hearing. If convicted of this charge the defendant would be facing up to five years in State Prison and a fine up to $15,000.
