Annual Holiday DWI Ticket Blitz Started in Monmouth County

Monmouth County Towns Obtain Grant for DWI Blitz

Law enforcement throughout New Jersey is back at it yet again. The annual holiday DWI crackdown is about to be under way in towns throughout the State, including five towns in Monmouth County. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign starts this Friday and will run through New Years Day. In total, 133 police departments throughout the State have received just under $600,000 worth of grants in order to facilitate extra checkpoints as well as extra patrols in order to help make it a safer holiday season. In 2018 alone, the blitz helped nab 1,269 individuals who are alleged to have been driving while impaired.  Although that number is till shocking, it is down from 1,400 in 2017.

Charged with DWI in Manalapan New Jersey?

Monmouth County is taking full advantage of New Jersey’s annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. According to nj.com, the MiddletownManalapanHowellHolmdel and Spring Lake Heights Police Departments each received $5,500 worth of grants. As mentioned above, the grant money will be used to increase local patrol as well as checkpoints. The increased patrol is coming just after the New Jersey legislature voted to totally change DWI penalties. Starting on December 1, 2019, anyone arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated as a first time offender will most likely not be subject to a license suspension but will force to install an interlock device. According to the new legislation, first time offenders with a blood alcohol limit of 0.08% to 0.10% will be required to have an interlock device installed in their vehicle for 3 months. If the individuals blood alcohol content is between a 0.10% and a 0.15%, they would be required to have the interlock device installed in their vehicle for 7 – 12 months. If the individual’s blood alcohol content is above a .15% they would be required to have the interlock device installed in their vehicle for 9 – 15 months and a loss of license of 4 – 6 months. This is a far cry from where New Jersey legislatures used to be when it comes to sentencing DWI offenders.
