Shoplifting Charges Issued in Hamilton, New Jersey

According to nj.com, a Hamilton Township school teacher was arrested and charged with shoplifting late last week. The Defendant, a twenty-nine year old female, was arrested at the ShopRite in Hamilton Township after the loss prevention officer observed her allegedly attempting to shoplift several items from the store. According to the loss prevention officer, the majority of the items were bathing products. The women was issued a complaint for shoplifting and released on her own recognizance pending a court date in the Hamilton Municipal Court. As a result of her arrest, the Defendant, who is a special education teacher at Langtree Elementary on Whatley Road in Mercerville was placed on administrative leave pending a further investigation.

The shoplifting charge that the Defendant is facing is considered a disorderly persons offense, which is New Jersey’s version of a misdemeanor. That means that the Hamilton Municipal Court, which is located at 1270 Whitehorse in Mercerville, will have jurisdiction over the charges. It also means that the dollar amount of the merchandise that the Defendant allegedly shoplifted was less than $200. If the Defendant is convicted of this charge she would be facing six months in the Mercer County Jail, a $1,000 fine, community service, probation and restitution if applicable. To make matters worse, there is a good chance that the New Jersey Department of Education could either suspended or permanently terminate the Defendant. New Jersey takes shoplifting offenses very seriously and these charges tend to be prosecuted rather aggressively.
